Pediatric Residents Present Healer’s Art

The Pediatric Residents from WSU-BSOM Peds Residency Program recently presented “A Program’s Experience with Healers Art: Fostering Compassionate Healing and Human Connection” at the Association Pediatric Program Director’s (AAPD) 2019 Annual Spring Meeting.

APPD Annual Spring Meeting was held March 26-29, 2019 in New Orleans, LA.

Faculty Program Director: Ann Burke, MD; Director WSU-BSOM Pediatric Residency and Professor of Pediatrics

Pediatric Chief Residents / Presenters: Erica Bautista, Thomas Bertagnoli, and Korre Fairman

Note from Erica Bautista, MD: I am one of the pediatric chief residents at Dayton Children’s Hospital. Along with my co-chiefs, Thomas Bertagnoli and Korre Fairman, I had the honor of discussing our pediatric residents’ experience with the Healer’s Art course during a platform presentation at the Association of Pediatric Program Director’s (APPD) annual meeting this spring. Our residency program was the first pediatric program in the country to incorporate the Healer’s Art course into our resident’s core curriculum, which we did during the 2017-2018 academic year. Over the past 2 years we surveyed our interns who took the course to evaluate different aspects of their experience. We found that, among other things, after taking the course our residents felt more supportive of their peers, more committed to patient centered care, more committed to medicine and better understood what being a compassionate doctor entails. Our platform presentation was well received. We are excited to continue offering this course to our future residents!

Note from Evangeline Andarsio, MD (RISHI Director): Please feel free to reach out to RISHI for further information regarding the platform presentation and how you can bring the Healer’s Art to your residency programs. Blessings.  https://rishiprograms.org
